Caringbridge

I've decided that I want to keep to keep a journal of Nathan's progress, doctor visits and surgeries but I want it to be separate from our family blog.  After many failed attempts to try to add it to this blog in a separate page, I have created a Caringbridge site where I can freely write about his medical and therapy updates.  My good friend Jen started doing this for her son Owen when he was born and has an amazing journal of Owen's life-his trials and his triumphs.  I so wish I would have started this sooner.  It also sort of serves as a therapeutic way of processing all the information we get when we go to clinic or various doctor visits.  Sometimes it can be very overwhelming.  I have just updated about our most recent visit today.  Click on the Caringbridge logo on the right or click here to read.  And for those of you who believe in the power of prayer (like myself), check back often and pray when you can.  We have a lot going on in the next couple weeks and are looking at a major surgery the middle of next month.

Thank you for all your support!!!

For the love of grandparents

Grandmas and Grandpas are everything nice.
Like presents and candy and raspberry ice.

And chocolate fudge sundaes, with cherries on top.
And popcorn and peanuts and grape soda pop.

In winter or summer, in rain or in sun,
Grandmas and Grandpas are wonderful fun!!!

1st owie

deserves a special band-aid.  He stared at this Elmo band-aid for the longest time!  It was too cute!

Wordless Wednesday

Fun in the sun

It's finally hot here.  So on Memorial Day we got together with some of our neighbors and let the kids play in the sprinkler.

Nate was not as brave as these boys were. He was content to just run his hand through it.
The pool will have to wait a bit-no swimming for a couple weeks post-op.

Indianapolis

For spring break we took a mini vacation to Indianapolis.  Just the three of us.  Hard to think that our days of being "just the three of us" are numbered! We stayed just outside of the city and checked out the Children's Museum and the zoo.  We also did a little bit of hanging around the hotel, swimming and relaxing. It was a great little trip.

Nate being silly after getting out of the pool

This is pretty much where we realized he loves dinosaurs.  Of all the things to do and see in the Children's Museum, he could have stayed at this dino table all day.
He actually cried when we moved on!
The museum was huge.  He enjoyed the train table, making a boat and watching it sail, and this hall of mirrors.  The sand...not so much.  Still having some tactile issues with the stuff.

I thought this was funny.  His face when he wheeled up to Bumble Bee from Transformers.  Look at how little he is compared to the 12 ft robot!
This was the first time we took his chair to the zoo.  It was great except for I was paranoid that he was going to get his hands caught in the spokes while we pushed.  It allowed him some freedom though, and at one point we just let him go wild in an empty court yard.  I also found out how dirty zoos are. His hands, arms and elbows were covered in dirt.  Time to invest in some gloves and possibly some elbow pads.
It was such a fun trip!  Hoping to have one more family vacation to Michigan this summer.  Then it will be "just the 4 of us" :)

Today

Today has been difficult.

Today, we talked about what was going to happen.  They would put on the mask.  And he would go to sleep.  And Dr. Bowman would fix his head.  After he woke up he'd have on a "hat" and probably an owie on his head.  We'd spend the night in the hospital.  And mommy and daddy would be there the whole time.  He had this down-packed.

Today, Nate was as happy as could be and flirted non-stop with the female nurses while we waited the 4+ hours for him to go into the OR.  (Must be those blue eyes and long eyelashes.)

Today we talked about what it means to be brave.  I told him being brave means that even when you are scared, you are still strong.  We practiced this when he had to get his blood drawn.  Would you believe that he didn't even flinch?  Not so much as a whimper when they put the needle in.  (If you know me or asked my mom, she would have a MUCH different story of how I reacted to getting my blood drawn when I was little.  And mom,  this is not an invitation for you to write the whole story in the comments.)

Today, Nate didn't eat anything.  And he didn't complain either.

Today, he had to have 3 xrays and was a champ.  Proudly showed off his stickers to me afterward.

Today when they wheeled him back for surgery, he was happily chatting with the nurse who was bringing him back.

Today, I learned something.  I learned that my 3 year old (as of tomorrow, anyway) is braver than me.  Like, waaaaaay braver.  I broke down yesterday (pregnant and hormonal + your baby being in the hospital for an unplanned surgery on his birthday = emotional mess).  I didn't want to.  I tried to control it, but I couldn't.  I sobbed into my hands that covered my face so Nate wouldn't see me.  But he knew.  He wheeled his little chair up to me and said, "Mommy, you sneezed?"  Broke my heart.  I realized something then-that I need to be stronger for him.  If he can handle it all so well, why can't I?  I can't even handle getting a cavity filled.  Seriously.  I can't imagine what kind of wreck I would be if Nate didn't handle hospitals and doctors and nurses so well.  I think him being so brave actually has helped me get through these times more easily.  And for that I am very lucky.

Today, my day-away-from-turning-3-year-old taught me how to be brave.

Nate-isms

We walk into his room and I turn on the light.

Can you see me now?

_____

Nate is spinning circles in his wheel chair.

Me: Nate, you're going to get dizzy!

He stops and gets excited, waving his arms.

Nate: I'm gunna get BUSY!

_____

Nate is playing on the floor with his beloved Wonder Pets.  I ask him what they are doing.

Nate: They're going to the grocery store to get food.

Me: What do you think they like to eat? (Expecting him to say celery since that's what they always eat after saving the animals.)

Nate: They like to drink coffee.

_____

We went to Indianapolis over Spring Break (still have to blog about that).  One of the days we were there we went to the Indy zoo.  Nate asked repeatedly to see the rhinos.

How bout we see the rhino?

Can we see the rhino now?

Wanna see the rhino?

We finally get to the rhinos.  Nate takes a quick look.

Wanna see the elephant?

_____

We saw muskrats at the Indy zoo.  A few weeks later, we saw them on a tv show.  I couldn't remember what they were called.

Me: Look Nate!  It's those animals we saw at the zoo. Um, I think they're called...

Nate: They're called Muskrats.

Me: (laughing) Yes, that's exactly right.

_____

It's time for lunch.  We are sitting at the kitchen sink washing his hands.

Nate: It's bery sprinkly.

_____

Nate is playing with the stuffed puppy we got him for Valentine's Day, which we so cleverly named Chocolate.

He's a good friend.

_____

It's Mother's Day.  I'm getting Nate ready for bed.  I ask him for a nice Mother's Day hug.  He complies, wrapping his arms tight around my neck.  Then he pulls away, looks at me and says,

How about a nice Mother's Day kiss?

_____

A few weeks ago we had his preschool evaluation.  He was able to see the classroom and interact with the kids, even having snack time with them.  He loved it!  A few days later he is moving all over his crib.

Me: Nate, where are you trying to go?

Nate: To preschool!
