Specs

Well, Nathan is looking more like his momma these days. At our appointment last week our ophthalmologist decided to give glasses a try as a means of avoiding surgery. She wants to see him again in two months but she is hopeful that the glasses will help him focus better and alleviate some of the crossing. Nate wasn't so fond of them at first-he kept taking them off (thank goodness for very durable and flexible toddler glasses!) but we have "set some boundaries" and he is tolerating them much better now. Except for when he looks at things over the top of them (which is hilarious by the way). We weren't sure where to find glasses for such a little guy but we found a great looking pair at the place where you can find almost anything pretty cheap...Walmart, of course! I think they suit him well (but hopefully only temporarily!) What do you think?

That's right

That's my wonderful baby reading books in his bed. He does that once in awhile so that his daddy and I can sleep in. This morning he woke up at about 7:45 and I went in his room to say good morning, gave him a couple books and his paci, and went back to bed. I didn't hear a peep from him again for an entire hour! He sure knows when his mommy and daddy could use some extra zzz's!

Wordless Wednesday

Neuro

Tomorrow night is the big sleep study. I mostly dread these because I enjoy sleeping in my own bed and theirs is far from comfortable. Nate was a real trooper last time-slept the whole night in lieu of all the cords stuck to his head and chest. The only part he really didn't like was when the nurses wrapped his head with gauze to keep all the wires they stuck to his head in place. That is really the only problem I foresee. Maybe I should stop jinxing myself.

Our appointment with the neurologist to go over the sleep study is next Wednesday. We also plan on having a nice long discussion about Nate's hand "mirroring". Our OT is looking for some sort of explanation and we are both hoping that we can get it from him. Unfortunately, his bedside manner leaves much to be desired. I always dread going to see him (and it's been nearly a year because of it). Nate, being the smart little guy he is, has started compensating to be able to do things his hands, for some unknown reason, won't let him do. For example, if he wants a better grip on a toy he is holding he will either put it against his chest or bring it to the floor and re grip.

Here are a couple pictures I took while I was trying to get him to break apart some toy links. He could do it if he grabbed them at the same time-but wasn't able to if I only let him hold it in one hand at first. His other hand would come over to gold it but his tiny fist wouldn't open (because the other was firmly wrapped around the links and what one hand does the other does). This probably doesn't make sense. On with the pictures.

In this post I mentioned that our OT was thinking about casting to get Nate to differentiate between his hands. Thank goodness we found an air cast to use-we had actually been talking about hard casting. The thought process behind this is that by forcing his hands to differentiate he will be able to build new neuro pathways that will allow him to eventually do it on his own. Curious to see what his neurologist says about this theory (although it makes perfect sense to me).

This deadpan stare his is giving is because when I took this photo he was intently watching his "baby can read" video. It helps pass the time while he is in his stander.

I do occasionally see him do things that make me take a second look-things that I don't normally see him do because he doesn't differentiate. We've been seeing some good side sitting and playing (sitting with one arm supporting himself and the other playing with a toy) which is a sign of progress. If you think of it, please keep us in your prayers this week and next. First and foremost, for wisdom for the doctors (especially neurology) and peace for Ryan and I as we go back to the place we dread the most. I've got some new and some exciting things to post about soon (Nate related-so don't go starting any pregnancy rumors!). I'll try to be more prompt in posting the results when we get them next week!

A very sweet day

I think this was my favorite Valentine's to date. What could be sweeter than spending the entire day with my two boys? We ate heart shaped pancakes for breakfast. During breakfast we traded cards, gave Nate a balloon, and I actually got flowers! Later we made Valentine cookies and topped the evening off with dinner and a movie. Yes, I'd say it was a pretty sweet day!

(This is my first attempt at a photo collage using Photoshop Elements-I still have a lot to learn!)

Snow much fun

Today we took Nate out in the snow for the first time. It was a fresh snow, and was still snowing when we went out.

He wasn't sure what to make of it at first.

But it didn't take too long before he decided he liked it.

A laundry basket and dog leash make a great sled in a pinch!

Then you can get pulled along like this.

And fall out a couple of times. Oops.

He absolutely loved it and we had a blast! That is, until my camera battery died before I could get a picture or video of us sending him flying in a laundry basket down the small hill in our front yard. Yeah, it was quite possibly the cutest thing I have ever seen (and scared the crap out of me each time Ryan would send him down!) The snow is still falling as I type this...there's always tomorrow!

Make it right

My husband thinks he's this guy.

Mike Holmes. He does a show on HGTV called Holmes on Homes where he and his crew go in and fix what contractors have made a mess of. You know, things like only finishing half the job (or less) and then running off with the money. Shoddy plumbing and electric. His big line is "we're going to make it right." Ryan seriously watches his show daily. In fact, he was watching one tonight when I begged him to watch something else. Anything else.

Now he wants to fix things. He walks all over the house talking about how we need to make this or that "right". Talking about fixing things that we have forgotten weren't working in the first place. Like the bathroom fan that hasn't worked since we moved in. Bless his heart for trying, but he is no Mike Holmes.

The other day he went ice fishing (why anyone in their right mind would want to go fishing in this freezing cold is beyond me-and the poor guy didn't even catch a fish!). He has these overalls that he got from somewhere that are really heavy and keep him warm. So, naturally when he got home he started acting like he was Holmes. I kind of see the resemblance. They may look somewhat alike, but Ryan lacks knowledge in "making it right". Like I said, bless his heart for trying!
